Larry McCoy - Watercolors at Monroe Clinic

Artist Statement

Most of my artwork is painted using watercolor because I enjoy the physical touch of the brush on paper, and the edge of control as water and pigment interact. I prefer painting natural subjects with the best painting day being outdoors with the changing light pushing me to make color and value decisions rapidly. Surface textures are also important to me as a way to add interest and describe nature.

I typically work on watercolor paper but experiment with plastic paper, multimedia board, and various other surfaces. I am interested in finding ways to use tools other than brushes to make marks. Sponge rollers, cut sponge, spraying color, are some favorites.

I create artwork to express what I feel about nature by interpreting light and texture into color and value. When I look at a scene, I think in the colors of my palette and plan the progression of the work in terms of when layers of color and water will be applied. I mentally float away into the painting process.
